The car's real price is a five-year number

A car's sticker price is roughly half its story. The honest figure is total cost of ownership (TCO): EMI interest, insurance, fuel, maintenance, parking, and — the silent giant — depreciation. A typical car loses 15–20% of value the first year and 45–55% by year five. This calculator assembles the full five-year picture from your inputs: price, down payment, loan terms, running costs, and expected kilometers, then shows a per-month and per-kilometer cost that makes alternatives (a smaller car, a used car, cabs) genuinely comparable.

The classic affordability shorthand is the 20/4/10 rule: 20% down, no more than a 4-year loan, and total transport costs (EMI + fuel + insurance) under 10–15% of take-home pay. Cars that need a 7-year loan to fit the budget don't fit the budget.

A worked example

A ₹12 lakh car, ₹2.4 lakh down, ₹9.6 lakh loan at 9.5% for 5 years: EMI ₹20,164, total interest ₹2.5 lakh. Add insurance (~₹40,000/year), fuel for 1,000 km/month (~₹8,000), maintenance (~₹15,000/year averaged): five-year outlay ≈ ₹12.4 lakh beyond the down payment — and the car is worth perhaps ₹5.5 lakh at the end. Net five-year cost: about ₹9.3 lakh, or ₹15,500/month, or ₹15.5 per kilometer. Against that number, a ₹300 daily cab commute (₹6,600/month) stops looking extravagant — unless the car serves needs beyond commuting, which is a legitimate answer the calculator lets you make consciously.

New versus used: where the math tilts

Because depreciation front-loads, a 3-year-old car at 55–60% of original price with 60–70% of its life remaining is usually the value sweet spot — someone else paid the steepest part of the curve. The trade-offs: higher maintenance risk (budget 1.5–2× the new-car figure), slightly costlier used-car loan rates, and no warranty cushion. New wins on peace of mind, financing rates, and the latest safety kit. Run both through this calculator with honest numbers; the gap is often ₹3–4 lakh over five years — enough to be a real decision rather than a preference.

  • Stretching tenure for a comfortable EMI. A 7-year loan on a depreciating asset routinely goes underwater — owing more than the car is worth for years.

How It Works

Affordability Calculation

We use the Debt-to-Income (DTI) ratio to determine affordability. A healthy DTI for car expenses is typically considered to be under 15-20% of your net monthly income, assuming your total debt obligations (including home loans, etc.) don't exceed 40-50%.

EMI Calculation Formula

The calculator uses the standard reducing balance method formula: E = P × r × (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1), where P is Principal, r is monthly interest rate, and n is tenure in months.

On-Road Price Estimation

For new cars, we add estimated Registration/Road Tax (approx 10%) and Insurance (approx 3-4%) to the Ex-Showroom price. For used cars, the input price is treated as the final transaction price.

Depreciation Logic

New cars depreciate fastest. We apply a standard curve: ~15% drop in Year 1, followed by ~10% annually. This helps visualize the resale value over time.

Running Cost Estimation

Monthly fuel cost is calculated as: (Daily Monthly Distance / Mileage) × Fuel Price. We also add a maintenance buffer based on whether the car is new (lower buffer) or used (higher buffer).

Debt-to-Income Ratio

This is a key metric lenders use. We calculate it by adding your new Car EMI to your Existing EMIs and dividing by your Monthly Income. Lower is better.

Interest Rate Impact

Higher interest rates significantly increase the Total Cost of Ownership. Even a 1% difference can add up to thousands over a 5-7 year loan tenure.

Loan Tenure Impact
