Why two accounts with the "same rate" pay differently
Banks advertise a nominal annual rate, but what you actually earn depends on how often interest is credited to your balance. Each time interest is added, the next calculation runs on a slightly bigger number — so a 5% rate compounded daily quietly outearns 5% compounded annually. APY (Annual Percentage Yield) collapses rate and frequency into one honest number: the true percentage your balance grows in a year. Comparing APYs is the only apples-to-apples way to shop for savings accounts, fixed deposits, and CDs.
The formula the calculator applies is APY = (1 + r/n)ⁿ − 1, where r is the nominal annual rate and n is the number of compounding periods per year. As n grows the benefit rises, but with rapidly diminishing returns — the jump from annual to monthly matters far more than monthly to daily.
A worked example
Take a 6% nominal rate on a ₹1,00,000 deposit. Compounded annually, APY is exactly 6.00% — you end the year with ₹1,06,000. Compounded quarterly: (1 + 0.06/4)⁴ − 1 = 6.14%, or ₹1,06,136. Monthly: 6.17% (₹1,06,168). Daily: 6.18% (₹1,06,183). The spread between annual and daily compounding is about ₹183 in year one — modest, but it compounds itself over time: over 10 years the daily-compounded account is ahead by roughly ₹3,300.
The same logic works in dollars: $10,000 at 4.5% APY versus 4.5% APR compounded monthly (≈4.59% APY) is about a $9 difference in year one and $120 over a decade. Small edges, but they cost nothing to capture — you're choosing between accounts anyway.
APY versus APR: two sides of the same trick
Institutions quote whichever number flatters them. Savings products are marketed with APY (the bigger-looking number, compounding included), while loans are marketed with APR (the smaller-looking number, compounding excluded). A credit card quoting 24% APR compounded daily actually costs about 27.1% APY — the number you truly pay if you carry a balance. When comparing any two financial products, first convert both to the same basis; this calculator does the conversion instantly in either direction.
Common mistakes when comparing rates
- Comparing a nominal rate against an APY. A "6.1% rate compounded annually" loses to "6.0% compounded daily" (6.18% APY) — the smaller headline number wins.
- Ignoring teaser periods. Many high-yield accounts pay the advertised APY only for 3–6 months or on balances up to a cap. Model the blended rate for your actual balance.
- Forgetting tax. Interest is taxed as ordinary income in most jurisdictions (fully taxable at slab rate in India). A 7% FD at a 30% slab nets 4.9% — compare after-tax APYs when choosing between taxable and tax-advantaged options.
- Chasing tiny APY differences across banks while a loan at 9%+ sits unpaid — paying that down is a guaranteed 9% return no deposit can match.

What is APY?
Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is the effective annual rate of return taking into account the effect of compounding interest.
Unlike simple interest, where you only earn on your principal, APY assumes that the interest you earn is added to the principal, and you start earning interest on that interest as well.
